In periodontics we treat inflammation of the gums and other tissue around the tooth (the periodontal).
By insufficient care of the oral hygiene plaque will wrap itself around the tooth. Plaque mainly consists of food rests, mucus and bacteria who break down sugars and carbohydrates into acids. When plaque isn’t properly removed on a daily basis, it may calcify. Calcified plaque is also called tartar.
Plaque can easily be removed by brushing your teeth thoroughly. If this doesn’t happen thoroughly, your gums can get infected. This condition is called gingivitis. In a later stage plaque will form between your tooth and your gums. This will cause a space between the tooth and the gums, which we call pockets.
The bacteria in those pockets will infect the tissue around the tooth. This proces is called periodontitis. Good oral hygiene is very important. The gums and the tissue around the tooth are the base of your tooth. Our prevention assistants take care of your gums and show you how to properly clean your teeth, the VIP treatment as we call it. Our dental hygienists will not only take care of your gums, but also of the tissue surrounding your teeth.
