What is a Root Canal?

A root canal contains the blood vessels and nerve tissue of a tooth. The roots of a tooth are found in the gum and attach the tooth to the jawbone. Above the gum we have the crown. The crown is on top of the root. Inside the root and the crown is the pulp. The nerves in the pulp senses temperature and pain. The actual name of root canal treatment is endodontic therapy, but a root canal is the common name nowadays.

When do you need a root canal?

A root canal is needed when there is an infection deep inside the tooth. The pulp inside the tooth can become infected by an untreated cavity. If not treated this can lead to an extraction of the tooth. The bacterial infection of the pulp will show up on a dental X-ray.

The symptoms of a bacterial pulp infection:

  • Pain when biting
  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitive teeth when hot and cold food and drinks
  • A loose tooth

After some time these problems fade away. Unfortunately the infection hasn’t disappeared. The infection has spread into your root canal. Then the real problems begin.

  • Pain when biting
  • Pain when chewing
  • Swelling of the gum
  • Facial swelling
  • Darker color of the tooth
  • Pus coming from the affected tooth

When you are experiencing such symptoms you need to visit a dentist as soon as possible. The longer the infection spreads the harder it will be to save your tooth. Book a dentist appointment today if you are experiencing such symptons.

How root canal treatment is performed?

A root canal is performed over one to three sessions.

  1. The dentist will clean your root canal first. This will be done under local anesthesia to minimize pain. The disease and dead pulp tissue will be removed.
  2. The dentist will fill the root canal with adhesive cement to seal the canals completely. The tooth is dead after root canal treatment.
  3. To protect the tooth a filling or crown is needed. After the filling or crown is placed you can use the tooth as normal.
